Legal Practice

Joseph Allen is a solo practicioner with a wide ranging legal practice, based on 41 years of civil and criminal trial experience in the public and private sectors. Allen focuses on civil and criminal litigation, writs and appeals. He also provides consulting and expert witness services to other attorneys.

A 27-year resident of Santa Barbara, Allen served the county as senior deputy county counsel for the land use group, as supervising judicial research attorney for the Superior Court and as deputy public defender. He was previously both chief public defender and elected district attorney of Mendocino County.

Allen, who graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1970, has taught at the Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law. He has been certified as a specialist in criminal law and was appointed as judge pro tem for the Santa Barbara Superior Court.
